K. U.M. Underwater Seismometer ISOPOD - an extremely compact and lightweight OBS on the market

K. U.M. achieved great success starting with the NAMMU underwater seismometer. However, the team soon faced an interesting challenge: how to develop a new, more compact short-term OBS system that only carries OBS essentials, is smaller in size, and more cost-effective.

K. U.M.'s response to this challenge is a new OBS called ISOPOD. ISOPOD can autonomously record earthquake data for up to 3 months underwater at depths of up to 6000m, resulting in excellent results. It is equipped with three 4.5Hz seismic detectors, one hydrophone, an ultra-low power four channel data logger 6D6, and an acoustic release integrated into the main pressure pipe to save weight, cost, and installation time.

ISOPOD is also equipped with external storage StiK, which can be replaced in seconds and redeployed without opening the pressure housing. The total weight of ISOPOD is only 95kg, and up to 10 sets can be installed on a standard pallet, making it easy to stack and transport. ISOPOD does not require any compromise on quality and reliability, as it is an extremely compact and lightweight option in short-term OBS.

Acoustic release device

Verified technologies emerge in new forms. The motor-driven release device is integrated with the seismic detector, battery, and data logger in a larger casing.

data acquisition system

The data logger is suitable for 4.5Hz seismic detectors and exhibits extraordinary performance in terms of data quality and power consumption. It makes ISOPOD the perfect tool for active earthquake operation scenarios, capable of continuously obtaining data for up to 3 months.

Design

The framework and buoyancy equipment have been carefully designed and streamlined to the basic parts to achieve efficient manufacturing and ease of use. One person can complete the assembly in a few minutes, and 12 sets of assembled ISOPOD can be stacked on standard pallets for transportation.
